I have had a number of donation requests and just now agreeded to another without thinking which was silly >.> oh well. But i digress how do you guys handle donation requests for you art? do you have a series of questions you ask about the show and where the funds will be going? do you perhaps only do a set amount per year or maybe only gift certificates?
I've never actually thought to ask a lot of questions beforehand... I do try to find more info on the show (like a website or FB page) if it hadn't been provided, and I strongly prefer to be asked by the show host or someone closely involved with the show. Usually I get asked to donate to a couple shows a year so it's no big deal for me, but if that were to increase I'd set a limit on how many I can say yes to. I really like donating though... I rarely show so it's one way to get some of my work out there.
I have several shows that I donate to every year (and have for many years). I appreciate the fact that they contact me well ahead of the event and remind me again when it's at least a month away. I also donate to shows I attend, usually for a raffle. These are all established shows.
I have donated to shows in the past where I have never heard from them again after mailing the item until they ask for another donation. A simple email when the item (s) arrive and a thank you after the item is given out (or won) is nice. I refuse to donate again if there is no communication. It's nice to know that the donation arrived safely and that is was appreciated.
When considering a new request for a donation I like to have a website for the event to look at (or already know the show host). It's always nice to know that the donation will either help benefit the show or the proceeds will be donated to a good cause. I also have to consider my schedule and if I have the time to create the donation. I try not to overbook myself with donations as my tack making and etching are my income but it is nice to get my work out there and seen.
There are a handful of shows that I donate to whenever I have the time. They're recurring shows, and I can plan around them.
When I was more active, I took one or two full tack set donation requests per quarter, including the recurring shows that I plan on. I took them on a first come, first serve basis - assuming they gave me enough time to actually put something together, had a legitimate show website, etc.
If I had time or something lying around, I might offer small pieces for the shows that fell during a full quarter. Barring that, I don't mind sending gift certificates for X amount off of an order or a free copy of the tutorial PDF that I sell.
I DO reply to all donation requests with a simple explanation about timing. If necessary, I might add something about why - beyond timing - I can't take on their donation.
