Update on the First Challenge!
This challenge will close May 16th after that we will showcase the creations everyone has completed and begin the next challenge!
Everyone is always welcome to compete and continue posting in the previous challenges however they will not be added to the showcase after the dead line. If enough interest continues in the old challenges in the future we can look into doing a showcase of new entries in old challenges
Ok so I have always wanted to have a regular challenge for people to have fun and encourage people to push their boundaries and try new things!
So with that in mind I present the first Meta challenge!
Each challenge will go for 3 months then at the end we will all vote for which artist has best achieved the most accurate representation of their item in model scale ^.^
This quarters challenge will be working from a real world item/reference and make it into model scale. This can be a jump, doll, scene, horse or tack item.
To begin the challenge simply post an image of what you will be making and maybe mention some challenges you might have and what you look forward to learning from this challenge!
Make sure your item is challenging but still something you will be able to finish within the time frame given
You may also post progress pics and problems you have so we can all throw ideas around to keep each other motivated
Okay so I got this great idea. I'm gonna make a biker cowboy. It's a cowboy dressed the same way as a biker, as if he's in a cowboy band instead of a biker band.
I'm basing the clothes on a combination of several bikers/biker vests from the internet, and my guy is gonna wear a hat, to keep the cowboy-bit visable too
So I'll start out with a breyer doll, and his blouse is gonna be customized so that if fits him well, as are the pants. Then I'll make him boots or I'll make his breyer boots look more biker-ish, and he'll get a vest.
Now the vest is the part I'll enjoy most! Bikers have some rules per club on what's on the vest and where it's placed, and I'll apply those rules on my guys vest, but I'll base it all on horses instead of motors.
His club will be called "Hell's Hooves", and his name is Joey.
Challenges: Well, to start with, I've never really made doll clothes or patterns for it, so this whole thing will be a challenge. The reason why I go for a leather vest (except for that it's awesome) is that I'm comfortable with working leather, while I don't really care for working with fabrics. So that is to compensate for the scary *I've never made a doll!* part.
Another challenge is the badges and letters on them. Bikers use a special biker font (there are several versions of it but it's mostly the same) and it might be hard to recreate that in small on the rockers (the text-patches on the back). Also the patches I chose for the front could be difficult because the font is supersmall there, while leather dye usually needs several layers to cover well, which will make it réally hard to keep the letters small and readable.
I've also got great performance ideas for this man, more info on that will come later on
A basic vest without decoration:
Rules and info from some club on the decoration of a vest.
Biker font:
My design. I didn't know the name here yet, which should be in the top rocker, but now I know that it's Hell's Hooves.
The logo of my band won't be a pegasus after all but an angry horse, based on this drawing:

This will be my project. The challenge will be figuring out the horsehead conchos and getting all of the metal to line up. Also if I can finish in three months!
I might modify the tooling some to suit my tastes better, but the overall style/look of the saddle I'd like to duplicate as closely as I can. My Zippo needs a western pleasure set and since I have all the materials already, this seems like a good time to stop procrastinating and get to work!
The challenge for me will be the tooling (I've never tooled a saddle before... this could be interesting...) and staying focused enough on it to complete it within the next three months. Yikes!
