What leather do you guys like working with best or think is best for small scale work?
I use vegetable tanned kid skin for all my tooling and thicker leather needs. A variety of garment leathers for all my soft leather needs these include chrome tanned kid, sheep and cow hides along with a few odd thin kangaroo hides. When I need patent leather I go for glossed pig skin which has worked well for me so far!
All the leather lace I use is kangaroo and I work with 1/8 (3mm and 1/4(6mm) widths
I like the Tooling leather from Rio Rondo a lot, it's great to work with and though it's expensive, it's also mostly flawless.
As for lace, I usually buy mine at Amazing Lace, they have very good quality lace with a very tiny grain. And the best thing is that they have many colours which are fabric painted, so the chance of the colour bleeding into your model is minimal!

I use Kangaroo leather for all of my projects because you can easily skive it down to skiver thickness or leave it as is for tooling leather. It is also very fine grained. I get my leather from Birdsall Leather and Crafts (http://www.birdsall-leather.com.au/). I buy the offcuts. I also get my leather lace from either amazing lace or Birdsall.
